Can a stranger read my NFC card while it's in my pocket or wallet?
No — NFC needs near-contact, not proximity.
NFC's range is intentionally tiny — under about 4cm, which in practice means near-direct contact. A card sitting in your pocket, wallet, or bag can't be read by someone walking past you, standing next to you, or reaching toward your bag; the phone has to be touching the card.
This is different from technologies like Bluetooth or long-range RFID, which can be picked up from meters away. NFC was designed specifically to avoid that kind of passive scanning.
The realistic scenario where your card gets read is the one it's built for: you deliberately hand it over, or hold your phone against someone's card to exchange contact information.
